Özet
This article discusses the method of compilation criticism, which is an effort to understand books of hadiths. The theoretical foundation for the compilation critique approach was first established by Stephen Burge. Centrifugal, centripetal, and broad centrifugal reading techniques are suggested in this approach. In centripetal reading, the narrative context is used to analyze the hadith's meaning. The meaning of the story is given in the context of the book in which it appears in the centrifugal reading method, like in the case of Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj's (d.261/875) al-Ṣaḥīḥ. The relevant narrative is analyzed using the broad centrifugal reading approach according to the customs of the time period in which it was incorporated. Furthermore, in this method, it is recommended to prepare a hors-texte depicting how the hadith was understood at the time the work was classified. The compilation criticism method can contribute to the field, especially in terms of understanding narrations by examining hadith sources holistically. The research is more significant because no research has been done on the topic in Türkiye. Through instances of the use of the compilation critique approach and its theoretical underpinnings, this article seeks to offer an alternative methodological analysis of comprehending hadiths and hadith literature. The article uses document analysis and draws on digital humanities to perform frequency and discourse analysis. For this, Voyant Tools was selected as the text analysis application. Ultimately, it was discovered that the compilation critique approach can be helpful in reading hadith sources and aids in comprehending the hadiths and hadith works overall.
