Özet

Introduction: Arteriovenous fistula is of vital importance for hemodialysis patients. Patients should provide fistula self-care to maintain fistula patency. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of education given to hemodialysis patients regarding arteriovenous fistula on their self-care behaviors. Methods: The study with a pre- and post-test design and a control group was conducted with total of 70 patients. Data were collected using “Self-Care Behavior Assessment Scale For Arteriovenous Fistula in Hemodialysis.” Results: After the training, experimental group showed better overall self-care behaviors with AVF than control group (72.1% and 85.3%, respectively, p = 0.000) as well as better self-care concerning both the management of signs and symptoms (74.0% and 89.7% respectively, p = 0.000) and the prevention of complications (71.0% and 82.6%, respectively, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Education for patients was found to improve their fistula-related self-care behaviors. Patient education given with written materials will contribute to the prevention of fistula-related complications and the management of signs and symptoms.
