Özet

Egypt, which was ruled under Ottoman rule for nearly four hundred years, entered the nineteenth century with important developments. The French occupation is one of them. The arrival of Muhammed Ali in Egypt among the Albanian troops and his appointment as the governor of Egypt, configured the new process in Egypt. The reforms carried out by Muhammed Ali Pasha in different areas such as the construction of a new printing house in Egypt, the opening of modern-style schools, and the sending of students to various European countries, especially France, shaped the modernization of Egypt. This article analyzes the interrelation of the actions with educational activities. It proposes to discuss educational activities in terms of Egypt’s modernization and to evaluate the phenomenon of education in its own context. The main argument of the study is the claim that the educational acts of Muhammed Ali cannot be seen as an element that creates the modern nation-state or invents national consciousness. The main purpose of the education of the Egyptians was nothing but meeting the human resources that emerged in the new army formation and supporting other institutionalization processes related to the army. This study examines the modernization in the palliative character that emerged in this process.
