Özet

This study examines Ottoman sultanate dreams and identifies the socio-political processes constructed through dream narratives, as well as their points of intersection with Islam. Its primary objective is to interpret, sociologically, the meanings that these processes assume within the triadic framework of religion, society, and politics. The research encompasses dream narratives concerning the sultanate recorded from the foundation of the Ottoman state to its dissolution. From the dreams identified in a literature review, those with typical, recurring characteristics were selected to focus on the social processes constructed around them. The study’s originality lies in treating Ottoman sultanate dreams –traditionally examined within the discipline of historyas an object of sociological inquiry. As such, the study also serves as an essay in the sociology of dreams. The study's perspective prioritizes the sociological implications of the dream narratives over questions of their factual authenticity. The findings indicate that these dream narratives served directive, constructive, motivational, and legitimizing functions. Moreover, they simultaneously linked the dynasty to Islamic and Turkic traditions while contributing to the formation of a “dual sultanate system,” comprising an institutional and a spiritual sultanate. Overall, dream narratives played a significant role in shaping the empire's socio-political dynamics throughout its history.
