Özet

Cities seek to improve tourist numbers and tourism profits by emphasizing their attractions and their popularity. Events contribute significantly to the social, cultural, and economic attractiveness of cities and hence provide motivation for municipal governments and countries to hold major events. Participation in these activities is often a motivating factor for local people and visitors. Kakava Festivities, where a giant Kakava fire is lit and people jump over it to celebrate the arrival of spring, and Hidirellez Festival, which is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List, are considered to be tourism attraction elements of Edirne, a border city of Turkey in Europe and the Balkans. Edirne celebrates the arrival of spring with concerts, dances, competitions, and several other events during the Kakava and Hidirellez festival, which is also followed by national and international media. The contribution of Kakava and Hidirellez Festival to Edirne has been controversially examined through interviews with 35 opinion leaders in the tourism industry. Opinion leaders believe that despite the city’s flaws, the Kakava and Hidirellez Festival provides locals and tourists with a great deal of enjoyment and contributes significantly to the local economy.
