Özet
Within the context of the Architectural Design Studio 5 of the Department of Architecture in Kirklareli University, architect candidates were demanded to design an “Exhibition Center” in the city center of Kirklareli, during the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year, in the scope of grounding the theoretical studies in the Architectural Design Studios on scientific research and developments, conveying the obtained data to the architect candidates so that they can use these in the design, i.e., approaching the experience based on scientific data as a method. Withing the context of the continuation of the city wall, students were demanded to make a design based on service to the public who continue their lives in residential and commercial buildings, on empty plots which are in the building blocks that are situated in the city center. The architect candidates were expected to include social content functions such as a mini movie theatre, library, book café, and an art gallery in buildings that can house cultural activities. The pedestrian axes of the buildings were aimed to be in connection with the present social and green spaces. The theoretical information that will direct the design was given to the architect candidates by the City Planning Specialist Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe ALTUN through a seminar as part of the course. The topic of the seminar was “mixeduse”. After the necessary theoretical infrastructure study, the social structure of the area was defined through an analysis of design areas and continued with possible designs. In terms of the synthesis provided by the analysis, spatial organizations were preferred for building design. The first part of the article defines the needs of mixed-use on an urban and architectural scale, and the second part elaborates on the theory of mixed-use and compact use: the purpose of analysis on city planning on a world scale has been to obtain findings on both an urban and architectural scale that will serve the end product through scientific studies and practices on the subject. The third part exemplifies three out of sixty studies carried out in the architecture studio practice. All three examples of this study highlight functions that visualize public use, as well as the use of the pedestrian axes nearby in the building. By assembling the obtained scientific and social data in the area analysis, the positive sides created by the mixed-use in the design were given in the fourth part that includes the conclusion and evaluation. The study aims to convey to the architect candidates that recreational spots can be created in the city by creating socio-cultural spaces in the studio practices in which insights on architectural scale in an urban context are given gradually.
