Özet

Menstruation is a process experienced by approximately half of the world’s population and is directly related to reproductive and sexual health. While menstrual health is expected to be addressed as a global health issue due to its prevalence among such a large group, it is known that individuals face various challenges in maintaining their menstrual hygiene and health. In this context, the concept of menstrual poverty, which refers to the limitations experienced by menstruating individuals in accessing hygiene products, basic healthcare opportunities, and health services, has become prominent. The United Nations has established Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which it aims to achieve by 2030, emphasizing the equal participation of people in opportunities in peace and prosperity. These goals do not directly address menstrual health and hygiene management. Understanding the current SDGs based on menstrual health outcomes will play a crucial role in maintaining menstrual health. Midwives, through their roles as consultants, educators, and advocates, embrace the concept of sustainable development in the delivery of health services. Understanding the development goals is crucial for midwives to take steps to ensure that individuals can live healthy lives and have equal access to opportunities. It can contribute to the process by raising public awareness through education and consultancy activities aimed at ending menstrual poverty and supporting individuals’ equitable participation in opportunities. Midwives' efforts to end menstrual poverty play a strategic role in achieving SDGs. This review discusses the roles of midwives in ending menstrual poverty and improving menstrual health within the framework of the SDGs.
