Özet
From 1877 to 1879, Âbidin Pasha played a crucial role in the politics of Southern Albania, particularly while serving as chairman of an extraordinary commission established in Janina during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). As chairman of that commission, Âbidin Pasha led a group comprised of distinguished figures from Southern Albania, working diligently to raise the local Albanian populace’s awareness of the threat of Greek expansionism. Having concluded his chairmanship, Âbidin Pasha became a leading figure in the Albanian Committee founded in his hometown Preveza. This committee was instrumental in organising key meetings aimed at preventing the potential secession of Ioannina, Preveza, and Arta to Greece. This study focuses on Âbidin Pasha’s involvement in movements between the years 1877-1879 that aimed to keep Southern Albania within the Ottoman Empire’s borders. It explores his activities during this critical period, highlighting how Âbidin Pasha’s Albanian identity influenced his professional career. The paper aims to shed light on Âbidin Pasha’s historical role during this period and to foster further research on this topic, underscoring its significance in the wider scope of Albanian and Ottoman histories.
